Firstly, there is usually food readily available at such locations. For instance, fish can be found in rivers. Also, wild animals that come for fresh water can be hunted by the people. Furthermore, it enables the people to keep domestic animals as well . Secondly, such locations are suitable for growing crops as soil is usually fertile near rivers. Thirdly, fresh water is readily available near river banks for daily essentials like drinking, cooking, watering crops. It also serves transportation purpose which enables people to move around and also trade with people from other places. OR Disagrees and explains disadvantages. Award 3 marks for an explanation of 1 disadvantage for civilisations located on river banks and an additional mark for any supporting detail /explanation of other disadvantages Eg.- There are only disadvantages for civilisation located on river banks. Firstly, the civilisation always faces the possibility of being badly affected by great floods due to heavy rainfall. Such floods can destroy food crops. Some cities were rebuild like cities of Indus Valley Civilisation possibly due to floods. Secondly, floods may lead to disease like malaria which is spread by mosquitoes and is an unpleasant experience. This could have been one of the possible reasons for the decline of ancient civilisations like the Indus Valley Civilisation. Thirdly, dangerous reptiles like crocodiles may be present in the river which can hurt the people.
